One Year International Ban
Sri Lanka proved that no matter how famous a player is, rules are for everyone, and they are meant to be followed. This Friday, the Sri Lanka cricket board took a very heavy decision to impose a ban on their three top players.
Currently, Sri Lanka is on England tour. However, these three players were found guilty of breaking Covid-19 regulations. As for punishment, they cannot participate in any cricket tournament, whether domestic or international, for one year.
Along with the ban, they also have to pay the penalty. They have to pay $50,000 as a penalty for breaking the rules. The three players who broke the rules are as follows.
- Kusal Mendis: He is the vice-captain of the Sri Lanka Cricket team. This 26-year-old batsman is quite important for the team.
- Danushka Gunathilaka: He is an opening batsman and an all-rounder player in the Sri Lanka cricket team.
- Niroshan Dickwella: He is the wicket-keeper and batsman of the Sri Lanka cricket team.
Reason for the Ban
These three players broke the Covid-19 protocols, which the team had to follow during their England tour. They were spotted outside their bio bubble in Durham one day before the match. Before the ODI against England, they breached the bio bubble and were seen outside.
It is one of the most severe punishments any cricket has ever faced for breaching Covid-19 protocol. Due to the current pandemic, all the players have to follow a standard protocol for staying inside the bio bubble during the entire tournament.
This punishment came as a shock to the Sri Lanka team. They have been struggling on the pitch and failing to perform well. Now, as the three most important players in the team are banned, it will become even more difficult for them to compete with others.
Initially, the ban was imposed for two years. However, after further deliberation, only one year ban was placed. Even after one year, these players will be on probation for two years.
This ban is a lesson for all the cricket players in the world. It is not right to jeopardize the safety of the entire team by breaching the bio bubble. These players have bought tremendous shame to the entire cricket world. Looking at the present condition of the team, winning the finals seems like a distant dream.
